Rose and Justine's story, and passion to end the stigma of mental health and addiction

Justine and her mother Rose

Why support the haunt?

Did you know that in any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental illness or addiction problem? By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have (or have had) a mental illness.

For those of you who are not aware, in 2012 just 10 days shy of their favourite holiday and after 28 years of battling addiction, Justine lost her mother to an overdose.

Then in June 2015 her Uncle Brad who was fighting his addiction issues, went missing and still is to this day.

So, every year she raises money for the Canadian Mental Health Association as she believes it is imperative that we end the stigma and help others going through similar issues.

About Rose Marie Greenside

Born in London, Rose was the 6th of 8 children and their first little girl, followed shortly by her only sister Lorie and the baby, Paul. Growing up with 6 brothers she developed quite the thick skin! Then at the age of 24, she had Justine, her very own little girl!

For as long as Justine can remember her mother was a prankster. She loved hiding behind things and jumping out to hear shrieks followed by laughter (or the occasional left hook). Their favourite thing to do was decorate for Halloween. Justine's favourite memories together were when they created tombstones, caskets, etc. and just going all out while laughing until they cried. Justine has continued their tradition of going all out for Halloween throughout the years, much to Rose's delight.

In 2012 Justine was in the midst of decorating her first-ever walk-through haunt when she got the dreaded knock on the door. That year she couldn’t bring herself to keep going with the haunt, knowing how excited her mom was to see it she just couldn't find it in her to finish it. Something about dead bodies and funeral flowers mixed together just really didn’t make it feel right.

However, the following year and every year since, she has gone bigger and better with decorations and has added a fundraising aspect. Justine knows that Rose would be proud of how she has turned my heartache into something wonderful and it puts a smile on her face knowing how happy it would have made Rose!

About Justine Jeffries

Born in London, Justine was the first and only child of Rose and Kevin's first of three. Born on a fun holiday, Cinco De Mayo (which astonished her mother when she realized it landed on Cinco De Mayo EVERY year) it's no wonder she's ready to party! Shockingly enough when she was young Justine was slightly quiet; we aren't positive when that stopped but she's been super loud and chatty ever since!

Growing up visiting her mom on the weekends Justine came to LOVE the time they spent decorating the lawn for Halloween. If you have ever been to her house you will see that the love for all things spooky and gothic resonates throughout the house. At the young age of 26, she went through the heartbreak of losing her mother and has dedicated her spare time to raising awareness for mental health ever since!
